Network upgrade - evening of Tuesday 21st December

Hi All,

As part of our continued growth, we will be making further upgrades to our network this evening to improve fault tolerance.

These changes will be made between 00:00 and 01:00 on the 22nd December 2010.

If there are any issues in making these updates, then we will revert back to our previous settings.

ADSL Web Surfing Issues - Update

Hi All,

We are aware of a few network issues across the UK internet as a whole.

This has amounted to issues with people accessing some websites.

We have currently put a work around in place so this affects our customers as little as possible.

We will review the situation in the morning and revert the changes once we know things have settled down correctly.

A few short network outages during this week - Update

Hi,

During this week, we have suffered around 4 short outages of between 2 and 6 minutes each.

We would first like to apologise for any issues this may have caused our customers. We are not entirely sure what may have caused these problems. We have failed one of our firewalls over and cleared any debug information it was carrying.

For the last 2 days the network has remained stable and we will continue to monitor the changes we have made.

Network Issues - Resolved

Dear All,

All networking issues have now been resolved.

A supervisor control card failed in one of our two border routers at our Manchester data centre. Although these routers run independently, So Internet traffic requires both routers to be run for its traffic to route correctly.

Initial indications pointed to the fact that one of the line cards (the circuit boards that contain the actual network switch ports) had failed. The 10gb/s line card was replaced first, but the router would not remain stable. After completely stripping the chassis, our last option was the supervisor (the actual control for the router)

Upon replacing this, the router would boot and remain stable. The M247 team then replaced the other line cards and restored the configuration line by line.

Full service was restored around 14.10 today.

We will be further reviewing this outage and making adjustments to protect against re-occurance.

If you are still experiencing issues, please do contact our support team - 0161 615 1275

Routing issues - update 3

We have now been able to locate the faulty line card and as a result replaced the supervisor.

The M247 team are now restoring the config from backups and we should be running again within the next 10 - 15 minutes.

Routing issues - update 2

One of our main data centre routers is refusing to boot correctly. Although a large percentage of the data centre is running, the So Internet connectivity requires both routers to be running for it to remain stable.

We are currently working through all the different options to try and get this router to restart correctly and remain stable.

We will be conducting a full postmortem after the event to find other ways of avoiding this happening in further.

In the meantime, thank you for your patience.

Routing issues - update

We have located the faulty piece of equipment and engineers are currently replacing it.

We are aware that this may only affect a small number of customers at the moment and will update again shortly.

Networking routing issues - 12.30 - 12-11-10

Hi All,

We are currently seeing a few network routing issues with traffic getting to our Manchester network. Engineers are currently working on this issue and service should be restored shortly.

Friday 15 October 2010

Email issues fixed

Dear all,

By around 2.30pm today we were able to restore full service after replacing a failed fan tray in one of our NAS servers.

Thank you for your patience while we corrected this issue.

Issues affecting MS SQL & Email

Hi,

Around 20 minutes ago, we seemed to have experienced a power surge to one of our racks.

These caused a number of our servers that handle email and MS SQL (basically those connected to our central storage devices) to reboot, or require reboots.

We are currently bring all services back online.

Email is currently offline and we are just correcting an issue with the gateway server caused by this reboot. We expect this work to be completed within the next 30 mins

I will update the ticket shortly once the issue is corrected.

Once again, thank you for your patience.

Network Update

Hi all,

Ok we reloaded the config back to the LNS but it just sat in a frozen state, we got the engineer to plug a console in, we then power cycled it and this bought it back on-line, we have a constant monitor plugged into it so we can see what's happening.

We are monitoring the network as a whole very closely and apologise for the service outages.

If you are struggling to connect to your ADSL please reboot your router.

Regards

So support.

ADSL issues part 2

Hi all,

The LNS has been reloaded but hasn't come back yet, we have engineers putting a console into it at the moment to see what stage it's at.

So sorry about the delay

MP Mark Garnier and Kidderminster Mayor Visit

We had a great opportunity on Saturday at the opening of a new education centre at the Simply Centre in Kidderminster to welcome the Mayor and local MP Mark Garnier to our offices.

Having recently won a contract to supply Wyre Forest District Council home workers with broadband, So Internet a division of M247 Ltd are making a local impact with their broadband and connectivity solutions.

We had great conversations about the current internet legislation and the the need to improve internet speeds to end users, so that would economy can grow. It was also a good opportunity to chat about our safe internet solutions and the work we are doing with local and national Police forces.

ADSL Issues 6-8-2010 - Fault Cleared

Dear All,

Well that was an afternoon we did not expect!!

As many of you will be aware we have been fighting some instability in our broadband service. Most of these issues have slowly arisen over a period of time as we have grown and have come to a head over the last couple of months.

We have been working hard to load the most stable version of the router operating system that benefits all of our customers. This afternoon's issues forced us to escalate the time span to roll this out.

I would like to offer my sincere apology for the inconvenience the outage caused today. Please rest assured that we are working hard to improve our service and do take this type of outage seriously.

By around 5pm we were able to stabilise the network and return service to about 80% of our broadband customers.

Soon after 8pm we were able to load the final version of the software and bring stability across all of our customers.

We will continue to monitor the network over the coming couple of days, but are excited by the initial results we are seeing.

Please note that we are in the process of changing our phone number and you can contact us on 0161 615 1275.

Thursday 29 July 2010

Short notice adsl upgrade

Please note this does not affect hosting or email just broadband.

We will be performing a router upgrade to again improve performance.

This work will be carried out after midnight today 29th July and should only take around 30 minutes.

If you are unable to get online after this work please turn your router off for 10 minutes and back on again.

Wednesday 28 July 2010

Hosting Outage - 10:50am - 28/7/2010

Hi,

We have had a router failure which is currently rebooting and routing should return in a couple of minutes.

We are continuing to investigate the issue and are putting additional cabling in place to avoid this happening again.

Sunday 25 July 2010

ADSL update

We almost managed the upgrade but had some issues with routing.

We took the decision to roll back the changes and try the changes again at a later date.

Thank you for your patience.

Saturday 24 July 2010

Emergency ADSL Maintenance

This evening we are moving all customers from one piece of ADSL termination equipment to another.

This process should only take about 10 minutes and will take place around 11pm this evening.

I am sorry for the short notice but the move is required to achieve better connectivity and stability.

After the move you may need to reboot your router to reconnect.

Issues for some ADSL users on the Tiscali network

Hi,

We have a few reported issues on our broadband service where users are connected through the Tiscali network.

The PPP sessions are currently not being carried correctly and as a result you may not have internet access.

Tiscali are aware of the issue and are working on it. We are expecting an update within a couple of hours and a router reboot at that stage should correct the problem.

We will update this post once we have more information.

Problems logging on to ADSL - 9am 15th June

Hi,

At around 9am this morning on part of our core network we stopped receiving some new ADSL sessions. This would be if you had rebooted your router, or tried to connect a fresh, but only seems to be affecting around 5% of our customers

This issue has now been identified as a problem on one of our upstream providers equipment and as such out of our control. We are currently awaiting a fix, which should be very shortly at which point a router reboot may be required to get you back online.

We will post a news update once we have more information and know that the problem has been fixed.

Hi All,

Last night one of our outbound mailservers failed. This caused an issue for some people sending outbound email.

The server issue has been corrected and all outbound email is working well again.

Please note this only affected some customers and was only for outbound email.

Issues Fixed

Hi,

Around 21:25 all network issues were corrected.

We intend to make further changes in the coming week or so to improve further redundancy beyond our firewall cluster.

Tonight the issue was outside of our control, but was corrected quickly once the issue was identified.

Network Outage - Again!

ahhh,

I am really sorry about this. We switched everything over to another router this morning and now we are suffering an issue with the replacement.

We are currently making changes and these will be completed as quickly as possible.

I will post a full explanation as soon as possible.

Paul

Network Outage Fixed - 09:10

Hi,

We have now been able to reconfigure one of our other border routers to take the traffic for our network.

All traffic is now routing and flowing correctly.

Thank you for your patience. We are adding further redundancy this coming week that will again strengthen our resilience beyond just our firewall cluster.

Network Outage Update - 08.36

We have now been able to identify the issue as a blade failure in one of our edge routers.

We are working around re-routing traffic at the moment and service should be restored shortly.

Paul

Network Outage 07.32 21-5-10

Hi,

Just to let everyone know that we have experienced a network failure at the moment, we are not fully sure of the issue, but it may be just one of the connections that has failed.

I will update this shortly as soon as I know more.

Paul

Thursday 20 May 2010

All emails now running smoothly.

Well what can I say but a very big thank you to our customers for their patience and understanding.

By lunchtime today we were able to track down the customer who had their email address compromised. We were then able to remove the hundred of thousands of spam emails this compromise had caused which meant that email was able to move smoothly again.

The software vendors then looked at our spam filter cluster to check all was correct and made a couple of changes to improve performance and this is now coping well.

The final issue was corrected at 17.58 when we located a rogue LDAP installation which was causing some people to not be able to log in to their email accounts.

So all should now be well with the world. Please do let us know if you continue to have any issues.

Email Update Thursday 20th May

Hi All,

We still have a few issues with email at the moment, but this is a sum up and update.

1. Spam Filtered Emails
This system is now running correctly and mail moving through without delays with nothing held in our queues.

2. General Mail Delays
One of our customers has had their email account targeted and are receiving a huge amount of spam email. We are currently closing this account. This is what is then causing mail delays for customers hosted on our PEM system.

3. Failure to login to collect emails.
This is a third issue! This is due to a corrupted database and is affecting around 10% of our customers in PEM. The software vendors are currently working on this and it should hopefully be resolved in the next few hours.

Spam filtered email update

Hi All,

Well we certainly were not expecting our SAN (large disk storage system) to fail today! Thankfully since it is built to continue running even after a failure, we did not loose any data.

It took us a short period of time at the end of our maintenance window today to fail the SAN over to it's backup setup.

During this time we experienced a build up of inbound email as it was not able to flow through our network.

As of 10pm today all mail seems to be flowing well with only around a 40 minute delay. The servers should be able to catch up with all in bound email over night bringing the system back in line.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding.

Paul

Maintenance works

This is just an update to the above title.

We would like to apologise about the delay with mail and thank you for your patience, Mail is flowing and the queue is coming down there has been a delay and should see this catch up through the night.

The issue came about when we bought our san back on line and the controller failed, we failed it over to the second controller but had to put some config in place to get mail working.

We once again thank you for your patience with this issue.

The So support team.

Maintenence Window Complete

Hi,

Thank you for your patience. We have made great progress over night.

Pretty much all servers are online, but we do have a few niggles to work out.

Email is just coming back online after the SAN (the large filestore system we use) failed to boot correctly.

We then just have a few Gold Vision VPS to get working again and we should be up and running.

If you do spot an issue, please do let us know via email - support@sointernet.com or leave us a message or talk to someone directly on 01562 821 853

Increase in spam making it through our filters

Hi,

A number of customers on our spam filtering service have noticed an increase in spam that seems to be getting through our filtering system.

These emails seem to be of a very specific format and we are working with the software vendors on a solution to block them.

I will send an update out once we have a fix in place for this issue and want to thank those customers that have helped us to identify the problem.

Important Network Maintenance Starting 9pm - 17-05-10

Hi All,

As our network continues to grow, we want to make sure we are always improving the service that we offer our customers.

We try to keep major maintenance down to a minimum, but have a window of opportunity to make some changes in a few days time.

We will be changing our network configuration on Monday 17th May 2010 starting at 9pm. We will be taking offline some of our non critical equipment first, followed later in the evening by those more important. Full service should be restored by round 7am on Tuesday 18th May 2010.

Please note that during this period ADSL connectivity will be unaffected, but access to email will be.

I appreciate your understanding with this short notice period, but do believe the improvements will be worth it in the long term.

If you do have any questions, please feel free to contact support@sointernet.com

Mail Issue

Hi,

This is just to let you know of a mail issue we've had this morning.

We were alerted at 7:03am by our monitoring system that one of our mailservers had stopped working, we have investigated this and shut that unit down so that the backup server could take it's place, this was rectified by 8:47am.

Mail is now currently flowing, but access to webmail is still off line, we are working on this at the moment and will keep you updated when this is rectified.

Once again thank you for your patience while we work on this issue.

So Internet support team.

ADSL Connectivity Issues Fixed

Hi,

Thank you for your patience.

We have now moved all customers from the affected LNS router to one of our others and everything is now working correctly.

If you still have issues connecting to the internet, please turn off your router for 10 minutes and then back on again, which should clear the fault.

Continuing issues for some users on ADSL

Hi,

We are still experiencing an issue with one of our LNS routers which has rebooted a couple of times today. This may have had the result of your ADSL connection dropping offline for a couple of minutes.

We are working on a fix for this which is scheduled for later today.

In the meantime thank you for your patience while we work on this issue.

Issues with dropping broadband 7.30pm 20-04-10

Hi,

We are currently struggling with one of our LNS routers (this is the first place your ADSL gets to once it arrives at our network from BT)

The router crashed a couple of times between 7.30pm and 9pm tonight.

We have reset this router at 9.08pm and are now monitoring the connections, which seem more stable.

I will update this post if we run in to any more problems.

Thanks for your patience.

Current ADSL Outages

Hi,

As many of you may be aware there has been a major incident at the BT Paddington Exchange in London.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8598371.stm

As a result there are around 437 BT exchanges that are not receiving full service at the moment. This will also have the knock on affect across a wider area than just the immediate vicinity.

We are also aware of a fibre break in the Luton area which is also causing ADSL outages for people connected around this location.

I will post further updates when I have them.

ADSL Outage 11:55am 15-3-10

Hi,

At around 11.55am today, one of our suppliers seemingly lost a connection to the BT network. This took all of our broadband (ADSL) lines offline.

Sessions should be now trying to reconnect to the second site. With a number of thousand trying to reconnect, the process will take around 30 minutes.

If you do not have connectivity after this time, please do power down your router for 10 minutes and then restart it. This should clear the session and allow you to get back online.

Thank you for your patience while we fix this issue.

Phew, that was quite an afternoon!

Hi All,

I often wonder why these things happen just as you have an appointment to go to !!

At around 4.30pm today (8th March), just as I was finishing a meeting with Wayne and Luke, we were alerted to the fact that our Redditch site was offline.

We could still get to some of the network, but not all of it. Within the first 30 minutes we realised our network was being attacked from outside and the hunt was on to find the serer that was being targetted.

At around 7pm we were able to isolate the VLAN (private network) that the server was on and bring service back for all customers. Over the next couple of hours we have been able to locate it to a possible 2 servers and these are now being reviewed in isolation.

During this time our ADSL network was not affected in anyway, but customers may have had issues with accessing email.

The network is now stable and we are monitoring the sitution

Thank you for working with us during this time to get the issue resolved.

Filtering that works - FOR YOU!

It's always great to hear that what we do works for our most important people - our customers! This week we had an email sent into the team that included the following:
"Thank you for all you do to keep our emails threat-free and spam-free. I take every opportunity I can to recommend you".

The filtering that comes with our broadband covers what websites can be accessed, protecting your viewing from pornography, race-hate, violence and gambling. If you use our email addresses or buy into the email filtering you will get a regular spam report that tells you what emails have been stopped and why. This means that instead of getting 100 separate spam emails, you simply get one report email that you can scan & then delete if there's nothing to be released. The two together are a powerful protection both of your time, and of what you have to see.

So thanks for the encouragement, that our filtering is truly working for you.
If you are happy with our broadband filtering and recommend a friend don't forget to tell them to mention your name and our recommend a friend scheme & both you and they will get £5 each!

Safer Internet Awareness Week

We are now half way through Safer Internet Awareness Week with schools having presentations, theatre productions and many other ways in which internet safety is being talked about. That helps our children know how to be safe on the internet, but what about us? Do we know the internet equivalent of the green cross code? Do we actively encourage our children to talk about what they look at? Do we know the technologies available that will help protect every member of our families?
If the answer is no to any of the above then call today 01562 829800 or email us and be safe on the internet!

Update on ADSL Issues

Hi,

After a router reset this morning at 6am our sessions today seem to have been stable.

Our wholesale provider had this to note today

>>>
As of 20:30, all sessions were fully redeployed on to the network although a rebalance was also required, which was commenced at midnight. Throughout the night, further work was undertaken in conjunction with the vendor and in order to apply these changes, a reboot of the device was undertaken at 06:00 which caused sessions to then reconnect to the platform. All sessions successfully redeployed back on to the network.

We are currently engaged with the vendor to determine the root cause of these incidents. This dialogue has been ongoing throughout the night, with diagnostic information provided now being subject to analysis prior to any further remedial work being completed tonight. Once we have root cause details, a more expansive post-incident review will be undertaken.

As of 09:00 this morning we can see that the platform is currently stable and is continuing to be monitored closely.

Our priority is always to provide the best possible service during the business day. With this in mind we will not be allowing our engineers or the vendor engineers to carry out any diagnostic work outside our usual emergency maintenance window of 00:01 – 04:00. This will delay our ability to provide a root cause and long term fix to this issue, but we believe that this offers the best approach for providing a stable service during the business day.
>>>>

We are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused and we will be in further discussions with our suppliers in due course to see what further measures can be put in place to reduce the risk of this happening again.

ADSL outage update 19:54

Hi,

We continue to monitor the situation and will update again shortly.

Thank you for your continued patience while this matter is resolved.

ADSL Outage 18:00 8th January 2010

Hi,

At just around 6pm this evening a large number of our broadband customers "dropped" offline. A painful sounding term, but one used to describe a sudden loss of internet access.

This issue currently seems to be with our upstream provider as we are still accepting connections from other sources.

I will update this post shortly as soon as we have an update.

Dear All,

Thank you for your patience and sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

Recent problems with sending emails to talktalk.net

Hi,

Over the last 7 days or so we have seen an increasing number of our customers struggling to get email through our systems to talktalk.net (or one of their owned companies, ie opal, onetel etc)

We had originally thought it could have been a routing change at our end that had caused this.  After a couple of days working on the issue we were able to get in contact with the network operations team at talktalk.net.

Today we chased the issue with them and have had a reply to say that they have found an issue in the way their mail servers were configured and that it has now been corrected.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused our customers, but in this instance it was totally out of our control.

The Need for More Control

So you have reached the stage, where just normal shared webhosting, doesn't give you the control you are looking for. You want to install your own software or applications, but don't have the access for that.

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) or a dedicated will give you the control and access you require and can move your business to the next level. Allow your staff to share documents over the web, or do away with those inhouse servers, now is the time to reduce costs and out source or upgrade.

With prices from just £25 per month, check out what we can offer

High Praise for So Internet Broadband

A customer's opinion of our broadband: "So's services has had a strongly positive effect on my two teenage boys by a) eliminating a lot of deliberate or accidental adult material; after making the switch to So, and b) allowing them to apparently "roam free" with all the positive effects on their development, security and self worth.
And the personal service is second to none. Indeed, you define the word personal in personal services."

Digital Britain - Opportunities and Risks for UK Businesses

The internet has changed the way we all work. Many employees can now access core business applications from anywhere – especially at home or on the move. This revolution has also opened these applications to many external users, leading to much reduced inter-company interaction times and more efficient business processes.

With the UK government’s Digital Britain strategy, the network will extend even further, requiring all businesses to take positive action to protect their resources.
